1/9

Now that we're back into the swing of things, I wanted to give you some information for the upcoming week.

Math: We are continuing our Multiplication unit. Now that we have explored the meaning of multiplication, we are now focusing on the facts.  We are working towards fluency (having a quick, efficient strategy for figuring out facts), then automaticity (knowing them automatically).  We will be practicing through games and stations in class, but it would be very helpful to practice multiplication facts at home as well.  We will be taking a multiplication test on Friday, January 17 and continue to review multiplication in our stations.  We took a pretest for this unit as well, so it will be sent home, along with the posttest.

Social Studies: We began our Mali unit this week.  As it is a very short unit, we will be taking our test on Wednesday, January 15.  Students have their notes in their binders, as well as a review packet, a 4 square we created in class, and the packet they received at the beginning of the year.  Please be sure to review these notes nightly before the test, but they will also need them in class, so keep them in the binder.

Reminders:
January 16th and 17th- early dismissal days
January 17th- end of the 2nd marking period
January 20th and 21st- NO SCHOOL
January 30th- Report Cards go home

Thank you again for all of your support at home!  I can't believe we are halfway through the year!

10/17

Ancient Greece Test: Our test on Ancient Greece will be on Wednesday, October 23rd.  This is a change from the original date of October 22nd.  We will be taking the test on the computer, so a sheet with your student's score will be coming home.  Please be sure to review class notes nightly to prepare for the test.
Math: We are beginning subtraction.  We will be going up to 4-digits, with regrouping.  You may see your student using a strategy you are not familiar with, so please be open to it.  If you have any questions about a strategy, please feel free to contact me and I'd be happy to explain it to you.  We're learning all kinds of new ways to solve math problems this year!

10/8

Here's what we're working on:
Math: We are working on addition.  Students are required to estimate sums and find the actual sum.  You may see your child solving addition problems in a different way- don't be alarmed! :)  We will be learning a variety of strategies this year, focusing on the understanding of the foundations of math concepts.  If you have any questions about a strategy, feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to explain any of them to you.
Social Studies: We have begun our Ancient Greece unit. We will be studying the contributions of Ancient Greeks, as well and the physical and human characteristics of Greece.  Check down below on this blog for links to great websites about Ancient Greece.

- We are working on Comparing and Rounding numbers in Math.  Talk about the value of numbers and what "nice" numbers they are close to.
- Back to School Night is September 17th from 6:00-7:00.
- Graded work will be coming home today.  Please be sure to take out the work and return the envelope signed on Monday.
